2012 Energy Conservation Code Raises Energy Standards

Tuckahoe, NY - Developed by the Washington, DC-based International Codes Council, the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) will be used by federal agencies like the National Park Service, Department of State, U.S. Forest Service and the Veterans Administration. The IECC will eventually be used by many state and municipal building departments all across the country.

Even though the 2012 IECC focuses on new and commercial construction, green building experts, such as Dr. Energy Saver®- a nation-wide network of energy specialists, predict that this new building code will have a major impact on upgrading the energy performance of existing houses. Alex Wilson, founder of BuildingGreen, Inc. and executive editor of Environmental Building News, is certain that the new code will have a major impact on home energy performance.

“Simply having code language finalized doesn't mean that a code is in force,” Wilson explains. “But any time a new building code is adopted, designers, builders, and building owners change their practices. I’m hopeful that we will see a residential version of this code in the not-too-distant future.”

Highlights from the new Energy Conservation Code that will impact existing home performance

More airtight construction. Blower door tests are already performed on houses during a standard home energy audit, to measure and detect energy-wasting air leaks. The IECC calls for mandatory blower door testing on new buildings. In colder climate zones, airtight construction techniques should yield a blower door reading equivalent of just 3 air changes per hour (at 50 Pascals pressure). This tight construction standard reinforces the need to stop energy-wasting air leaks with expert air-sealing work.

Higher insulation levels. The new code stresses the importance of insulation in all areas of a building, from basement to attic. For existing houses, the best opportunities for insulation upgrades are in basement, crawl space and attic zones.
Well-sealed ductwork. Leaky ductwork wastes energy by increasing HVAC system run time. The IECC proposes a maximum leakage of just 4cfm (cubic ft./min.) for every 100sq.ft. of floor area. Even though it’s easy to seal ducts when a house is first built, this work is often neglected or entirely omitted. That’s why duct sealing improvements remain very important for existing houses.

More efficient lighting. Recognizing advancements in efficient lighting technology, the new code calls for at least 75% of a new building’s lighting to be “high efficacy.” Thanks to the widespread availability of low-watt compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and even more efficient LED lights, this standard is just as easy to achieve in existing houses as it is in new construction.

Innovative Air is a progressive HVAC company owned and operated by two brothers: Michael and Matthew Carlo. Where Does All My Heat Go in the Winter?

Have you ever noticed after a snowfall, some of your neighbors’ roofs are blanketed in snow while others are bare? These bare roofs are a sign of a poorly insulated attic. As heat escapes from the attic, due to the “stack effect,” the snow melts away and once it leaks to the edge it oftentimes turns into ice damming.

The Stack Effect
The “stack effect” plays a key role in the melting of snow melt on roofs. Warm air is trying to rise, which is why the warmest air in the house will always be in the top of your home. When this warm air leaks out through crack and gaps near the top of the house, a similar volume of outside air leaks in to avoid causing a vacuum, this is called infiltration.

R-Value
Many New York homes have attic insulation that is either inadequate and/or was poorly installed, which does not help when trying to retain heat. Insulation is measured in “R-value.”

R-value is the insulation’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value the greater the insulation effectiveness. There are two ways to measure R-value, overall/total R-value and R-value per inch. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends having an R-value between R-49 and R-60 for attic insulation, this is total R-value.

Unfortunately The U.S. Department of Energy states that most attics don’t have adequate insulation according to current recommendations they established. Some houses even have an R-value as low as 19.

What Causes Poor Insulation
Insulation’s job is to slow the transfer of heat, which is just as important in hot weather as it is in cold weather. Poor insulation can be caused due to a variety of things.

•Voids: These are areas where insulation is absent. Research has shown that just a 4% void in fiberglass batt insulation can result in a 50% reduction in insulation effectiveness. Fiberglass batt insulation the most common form of insulation and fills the space in between wall studs. It typically comes in the form of rolls and are typically yellow or pink.
•Compression: This eliminates many tiny trapped air pockets that provide insulation value, thus reducing its effectiveness.
•Air Movement: When air can pass through insulation it obviously is not doing its job to retain heat.
•Moisture: This has the potential to decrease the R-value of insulation by causing settling, compression and voids.

There are many kinds of insulation such as: fiberglass batts, cellulose, rigid foam board and spray foam insulation. Each of these has particular characteristics that make it suitable for some homes, but not for others. Before going out and buying a bunch of insulation it is best to get an insulation estimate to see which form is best for your home.

Dr. Energy Saver Westchester Teams Up With HOPE Community Services this Thanksgiving

Tuckahoe, NY – Dr. Energy Saver® Westchester has teamed up with HOPE Community Services to collect donations for Thanksgiving dinner as well as offer a discount on Dr. Energy Saver services when donations are made.

“The Energy Elves Are Coming to Town” is the theme of the Dr. Energy Saver Holiday efforts to support and give back to those in need. Mike Carlo, owner of Dr. Energy Saver Westchester, and his team, are asking homeowners to help donate to the local food kitchen.

Dr. Energy Saver is offering $25 off the proposal for each item given to the HOPE Food Bank. The customer can receive up to $500 off of orders more than $3,000.

"This is another fantastic way you can have a positive effect on so many different levels this holiday season. Not only are you helping a family in need with a donation to the Hope Community Services, but you are improving your own comfort and doing something positive for the environment. It’s a win, win, win," said Carlo.

One Dr. Energy Saver Westchester employee, Jessica Parnell, will donate her time on Thanksgiving eve to serve the holiday meal to all in need at the Hope Soup Kitchen

The HOPE Soup Kitchen most urgently needs items for their Thanksgiving Day meal such as: Macaroni & Cheese, canned or packets of gravy, pie crust, cranberry sauce, seasoned stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned vegetable and more.

HOPE Community Services, Inc. is a not-for-profit agency founded in 1984 by Mary Lou McNaney in response to the hunger she saw in New Rochelle. The HOPE Soup Kitchen serves meals every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and 2 Mondays each month. HOPE Community Services also has a food pantry which provides groceries to families in need each week based on their family size.

Dr. Energy Saver Westchester Sponsors Team Daniella and the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Westchester County, NY – Dr. Energy Saver Westchester has participated in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, and has also sponsored Team Daniella’s efforts.

Team Daniella honors the fight and victory of Daniella Carlo, the wife of Dr. Energy Saver Westchester Owner, Michael Carlo. So close to home, the employees were sure to sponsor and participate in Team Daniella’s strides in the October 16 walk at Manhattanville College.

"Daniella and I are blessed to have such great friends and family that continue to support our fight against breast cancer year after year. This walk has become a family tradition. Thankfully, Daniella is winning her battle and this event serves as a reminder of those that face these same challenges. We are proud to show our support in any way we can," said Mr. Carlo.

Mrs. Carlo was first diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2006. Such news could seemingly damper spirits of the mother-to-be, pregnant with the couples’ daughter, Gianna. But Daniella fought feverishly to win the battle for her and her daughter. She remains cancer-free and the couples’ daughter is a healthy, happy 5-year-old.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a well-known fundraiser of the American Cancer Society, where more than 200 “strides” each year help increase awareness and raise donations to fight breast cancer.
